The University of Arizona's McKale Memorial Center was the location of a memorial service for the victims of the Jan. 8 mass shooting in Tucson. Gabrielle Giffords was meeting her constituents to answer any questions they may have when the tragedy took place.
Twenty-two year old Jared Loughner shot the congresswoman at close range in the head, but she miraculously survived because of the heroic efforts of U of A intern Daniel Hernandez who had only been on the job for five days, and the doctors who cared for her immediately afterwards. Six people died, including a 9 yr. old girl born on 9-11-01 and federal judge John Roll. The community set up a memorial outside the hospital, where stuffed animals and symbols of hope have piled up for days, to give comfort to the families of the victims.
President Obama's speech at McHale Center was to confort a grieving nation and honor those whose heroic efforts helped many get through this tragedy in Tucson. First Lady Michelle Obama was in attendance also, to meet and honor the heroes of this tragedy. President and Mrs. Obama also visited Gabrielle Giffords in the hospital prior to the memorial service, and told the nation that she opened her eyes for the first time (since the shooting), which of course brought on a huge applause by everyone in attendance. Giffords' husband is NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, who is scheduled to command the planned launch of Endeavour on 1 April, to the International Space Station.
