Born Antonio Caetano de Abreu Freire within a rural aristocratic family, his uncle and godfather, the priest, Caetano de Abreu Sá Freire Pina Resende, insist that the surname (last name) was added Egas Moniz, because of the family, descending in direct line of Egas Moniz, a schoolmaster of Dom Afonso Henriques.
