The Macdonald House was constructed in the years immediately following the Second World War. It is situated in central Singapore, on the always popular Orchard Road, home to big name shopping malls and five star hotels, where tourists can indulge in endless expenditure on unnecessary items. Though now it is not in the very best part of Orchard Rd, but 'down the street' a little from the big action.
According to the historical plaque featured on the building it was built in a neo-Georgian style for the Hongkong Bank, and it was also the first fully air-conditioned building in Singapore (I am sure that it was popular place to work). It was bombed in 1965 during the Indonesian/Malaysian 'Konfrontation' (1962-5). It is now home to Citibank.
The building was opened for business by the wife of Singaporean Governor General of the time, whose name also graces the building. There is no indication as to why this is so.
One little problem are the dates given. The foundation stone states 1947, while the commemorative plaque says 1949. I will go with the foundation stone date in this waymark.
