The Valongo Sanitarium, built in 1910 to house people with TB. The disease was beginning, it was highly contagious, so they built the hospital to house 50 people, give rest to them and away from the rest of the population. It turns out that tuberculosis has become an epidemic, and the sanatorium was overcrowded with 150 people. Then they increased the hospital, with five floors and a capacity to accommodate up to 500 patients of White Plague. The place was perfect with enormous balconies to catch the sick air even on rainy days, since the disease attacks the lungs. Dedicated doctors who risked their lives to caring for patients. But the disease was cruel, and had no cure in the sanatorium patients died more than 63mil. When antibiotics came discovered the cure of tuberculosis, the disease was eradicated and Valongo sanatorium closed in 1961. They tried to reopen its doors in 1962 as a nursing home, but he soon ended with accusations of abuse of patients
