This pump is located in front of one of the historic stops in Andersonville, Georgia. Then office of prison commandante Henry Wirz is across the road from the infamous Confederate run Civil War prison where so much suffering took place. There were no pumps on the over crowded prison grounds but the prisoners dug "wells" with thier bare hands which were little more than little pockets in the ground.
This pump appears to have been placed some time after the original. It has a valve on the spout which I think is a more recent advance to this type of pump, say within the past hundered years or so. The bucket that hangs on the pump today is rusted out on the bottom and holds no water.
