Sir Edward Appleton made many discoveries relating to radio waves. His work not only enabled long distance communication around the world, it also allowed the correct radio wavelength to be calculated to allow radio communication beyond earth.

The heavily eroded Appleton Crater on the far side moon is named after him. It is at location 37.2°N 158.3°E and has a diameter of 63 km.
