[ENG] Antal Stašek (born Antonín Zeman) (22 July 1843 – 9 October 1931), was a Czech writer and lawyer.
He was born in the village of Stanový in the Liberec district of northern Bohemia. From 1877, Stašek was a successful barrister in Semily. His work is mainly set in the area around the Krkonoše mountains that straddle the today's border between the Czech Republic and Poland. Stašek was heavily influenced by socialism and social justice and was perhaps the first Czech writer to work with these themes.
His best known novel is Matusch the Shoemaker and his Friends published posthumously in 1932. Stašek worked briefly in Mohelnice before moving to Prague in 1913 where he spent the rest of his life. His son was the writer, Ivan Olbracht.
[CZ] Antal Stašek, vlastním jménem Antonín Zeman, (22. cervence 1843, Stanový, 9. ríjna 1931, Praha) byl ceský spisovatel a právník.
Narodil se jako první z deseti detí v rodine písmáka Antonína Zemana st. Vystudoval gymnázium v Jicíne a Krakove. Po získání maturity studoval práva v Praze a v Krakove. Pracoval též krátce v redakcích novin, prispíval napr. do Národních listu, Kvetu. V roce 1866 univerzitu v Krakove dokoncil a získal titul doktora práv.
Následne pusobil jako advokátní pomocník v Kolíne (1869) a v Praze (1870–1873). V letech 1874–1875 pusobil v Rusku v Petrohradu jako soukromý vychovatel. Od r. 1877 pusobil jako advokát v Semilech a zacal se angažovat také politicky. V letech 1889 až 1895 byl zemským poslancem za Národní (staroceskou) stranu, byt v mládí „souznel s mladocechy“. Od r. 1913 žil v Praze-Krci a pokracoval ve své literární tvorbe. V roce 1918 se stal clenem Revolucního národního shromáždení. V Praze nakonec i zemrel ve vysokém veku 88 let.
