Cohb formerly known as Queenstown was an important port city during the 19th and early 20th century as 2.5 million Irish emigrants traveled through the port destined to mostly North America. The train station built circa 1890 replaced the original station which was located to the west. The rail line from Cork to Cobh was a difficult one to construct due to Cobh being located on Great Island. The line opened 1862 via two long causeways and two viaducts as part of the Cork and Youghal Railway Company. In 1866 the Great Southern and Western Railway took over the company. The line from Cork to Cobh became a vital link to the port. The line was used by military, naval, mail, emigrant and tourist traffic. Deepwater Quay was developed at the station in 1882 and passengers, mail and baggage was transferred to tenders to be brought to the liners anchored at the mouth of the harbor. First and second class passengers for the Titanic used the station as their transfer point to the tender "Ireland" which brought them to the liner in the harbor as Cobh then known as Queenstown was the last port of call for the ill-fated Titanic.

The station is now used as the Cobh Heritage Center. The current interurban railway station is located nearby.
