Five years of construction saw the completion of this landmark bridge over north Tokyo bay in 1993. It is officially named the "Shuto Expressway No. 11 Daiba Route - Port of Tokyo Connector Bridge," but most commonly known as the "Rainbow Bridge," (or just, "R.B.") due to the red, white and green solar-powered lights that illuminate it at night.
The upper deck of the bridge carries motorized traffic, while the lower deck carries a light transit line and pedestrian traffic (only during the day).
References differ on its length, ranging from 798 meters (2,618 ft) to 570m (1870 ft). It has three spans, the main span measuring 80 meters (1,903 ft), with 126m high towers.
The towers are white in order to blend in with the Tokyo skyline in the background.
