This shrine is Tokyo’s largest Hachiman shrine, dedicated to the worship of the god Hachiman, the god of martial arts and war. It was founded in 1627, and is the reputed origin of the arts that eventually developed into the modern sport of Sumo.
There are several stone shrines related to sumo near the main shrine building and rituals are still held here when a sumo reaches the status of yokozuna.
This shrine, once facing Tokyo Bay before landfills relegated it to an inland location, was destroyed by bombing in 1945.
