Successful theatre Impressario had the Alhambra theatre built in 1914. He ran a number of other theatres, but the Alhambra was the grandest and most successful. He specialised in putting on pantomimes. These are musical-comedy theatrical productions traditionally performed over the Christmas holiday period.
After his death, the theatre went into decline and was bought by Bradford Council in 1964. In 1986 the theatre was refurbished and extended at a cost of 6 million pounds. It has a seating capacity of 1450, in 3 tiers.
It has an Edwardian style interior, complete with French-style plasterwork.
The theatre is purely a receiving theatre for touring companies and does not put on its own productions.
There is a ground floor restaurant where you can have a 2 course meal before the performance. Alternatively you can sit in the lounge and order extras like champagne and strawberries. There is also a bar on each floor of the building.
The co-ordinates were taken outside the main entrance at the front of the theatre.
It is a ten minute walk from the bus and rail Interchange and from Forster Square train station. It is a five minute walk from bus stops on Centenary Square (645, 636, 637, 845, 846, 640,641). It is across from the National Media Museum, Bradford College and opposite The Love Apple Café Bar.
