The League of Soldiers was established in 1923 under the name League of Combatants of the Great War. Upon creation brought together in an association the military and former Portuguese soldiers who had fought in the 1st World War.
Later the league is now open every Portuguese ex-combatants, changing its name to the League of Combatants.

Promote the exaltation of loving the motherland and national symbols
Internationally promote the prestige of Portugal
Promote the protection and mutual assistance of former combatants;
Cooperate with the authorities in helping former combatants;
Develop cultural and educational activities to benefit the country and former soldiers.

Major League members are members combatants include members of the armed and security forces who participated in missions to war or peacekeeping. There are also other categories of partners including other military personnel, civilians who have participated in missions to war, families of former combatants
