This monument is located in central Jakarta, in a large open, public area (Merdeka Square). The monument is a 128.7 metre high, white tower, atop of which is a flame, constructed from gold foil. I will confess, to me, the monument looks like a large candle. From wikipedia: the structure represents a mortar and pestle, traditional implements, and also, a lingga and yoni, the male and female sexual organs—interesting combination.
Construction began in 1961 and was complete by 1975, after a somewhat disputed, decade long planning effort. Atop the monument is a lookout platform. The monument also contains a museum of Indonesian history, and high-relief depicting the history of Indonesia. It is also close to several other tourist and cultural sites.
Merdeka Square is a large open area, always busy with visitors and, in the cool of the evening, many local residents can be found enjoying the pleasant environment, playing football/soccer, teenagers of opposite genders hanging out, people having picnics, and in general socialising.
