In the early 20th Century, Portuguese Government threw a planned campaign to reduce the rate of illiteracy in the country. Thousands of primary schools were built, following the same architectural concept. The design was similar, only the scale would change accordingly to the size of the community they would serve.
From the second half of the 20th Century there was a major demographic move, when young people in the countryside started moving either to other countries or to the main cities in Portugal. That made many of these schools obsolete. There were no students anymore. Most of this non-necessary schools were sold by the State to individuals. But in some case they were abandoned. The former is the case of this school.
