The July 8, 1832, the beach near Arnos Pampelido, Perafita between the parishes of the county and Lavra Matosinhos, held an event that would decisively change the course of history and mark the beginning of the end of absolutism in Portugal.

The obelisk in granite include references to the date of landing in two observable metal crowns on top. Four panels limestone at its base note references to the initiative of building the monument, some of the commanders of the "Liberation Army" and the famous proclamation that D. Pedro IV made to soldiers before landing.
Restored in 2001 by Mayor of Matosinhos, the Obelisk of Memory is a fundamental element of the historical heritage of the region and is part of a dune area also protected by the municipality.
Organized from the Azores a squadron D. Pedro IV with an army of 7500 men landed on this beach with the aim of bringing the country to establish a modern and liberal regime. Choosing this place surprised the army absolutist since an attack waiting to Lisbon to defend the North had been unmanned. After landing the "Liberation Army" headed to the port where they came peacefully on July 9 and where heroically resisted for a year at the Siege of Porto. "
Noting the location of the landing was erected on the initiative of António José de Ávila public subscription and an obelisk designed to perpetuate the memory of this event. Its location was based on the testimony of elements of the "Liberation Army" which, incidentally, were present, beside the Queen Mary II at the launch of its foundation stone on December 1, 1840. But it would take 24 years to get to finalizing the obelisk, has been proposed for classification as a national monument in 1880.
