About the singer: Rui Veloso is regarded as the "father of Portuguese rock", this composer and interpreter had a great impact on the Portuguese music scene with the record Ar de Rock (April 1980). Songs such as Chico Fininho and A Rapariguinha do Shopping were instant classics in the 1980s. His lyrics, normally written by Carlos Tê, are strongly influenced by the Porto culture. An unconditional lover of the blues, he has played with B.B. King a several times. He became one of the most productive and renowned Portuguese musicians, as his discography clearly shows today.
About the place: Porto Covo is one of the two civil parishes (freguesias) in the municipality of Sines. It is located in the western coast of Portugal, about 170 km (110 mi) south of Lisbon and is well known for its beaches. The name "Porto Covo" probably means Port of the covos, where a covo is a kind of fishing net for capturing lobsters and crabs.
About the song: It was released with the album Rui Veloso (yes, just the name of the author) in 1986 and it was an instant success. Until that year Porto Covo was a small village known just from a few, but the song brought sudden development, as often happens, for the worst. The place lost its intimist atmosphere as a whole country became curious about the place described in the song.
The Lyrics: shortly, they describe the place and tell the old tale of the moorish nobleman who planted the peach tree which inspired the name of Pessegueiro island (off the Porto Covo village, see picture).
