"Vienna Conference of Princes 1515: Meeting of Emperor Maximilian I with the Jagiellon Wladislaw of Bohemia and Hungary and Sigismund of Poland. After preliminary negotiations in Preßburg (now Bratislava) provisional treaties were signed on May 20, 1515. The monarchs met on a hill near Trautmannsdorf an der Leitha on July 16 and arrived in Vienna on July 17. The conference began in the Hofburg Imperial Palace on July 19, final negotiations took place on July 20 and 21. Prince Ludwig of Hungary was adopted by Maximilian I and made vicar-general of the Empire. Two marriage contracts were also concluded, the first between Ludwig of Hungary and Maria of Austria, and the second one between Maximilian (as proxy for his grandsons Karl or Ferdinand) and Anna of Hungary: if neither Karl nor Ferdinand concluded the marriage contract within one year, Maximilian himself would marry Anna. Maximilian was put in charge of her education, the marriage was to be consummated later due to the young age of the children. Maximilian concluded a peace and friendship treaty with the Polish king. Most of the treaties were dated July 22, 1515, the day of the double wedding; the solemn final manifestation was held in Vienna on July 28, 1515, and the conference ended with a visit to Wiener Neustadt and a deer hunt. The conference, which cost as much as a military campaign, was financed by J. Fugger. Maximilian's successful marriage policy was the basis for Austria's rise as a major European power."
