A milestone in the Portuguese Gothic architecture is the Monastery of Batalha, built at the behest of King John I to commemorate the victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota against the Spaniards. The work of the monastery, begun in 1388 and followed that until the sixteenth century introduced the flamboyant gothic international in Portugal, away from the aesthetic mendicant. This monastery influence many works of fifteenth-century Portugal.
The Monastery of Our Lady of Victory (also known as the Batalha Monastery is located in Batalha, Portugal, and was built by King John I as a thanksgiving to the Virgin Mary for the victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota. The Dominican monastery was built over two centuries, since its inception in 1386 until about 1517, during the reign of seven kings of Portugal, but since 1388 has lived there the first Dominicans.
