Education is a continuing process, and this simple art work portrays it well. The “unfinished memorial” stands in Westmar Memorial Park, former home of Westmar College which closed its doors in 1997. The focal point is a trowel permanently embedded in a slab of cement, and the base is created with bricks from two college halls that were torn down in 2002.
The plaque reads: "This unfinished memorial, created from the bricks of Dubs and Wernli Hall, is dedicated to the task of continued education. Westmar College served this community in that task for 107 years, and while only a memory of Westmar College remains, the task of education will go on forever. Education is the only vehicle through which the world can grow in peace and understanding. To that task we commemorate this Memorial Park. Le Mars Sertoma Club.” The monument was dedicated in 2004.
Westmar alumni and friends still strive to keep the “Spirit of Westmar alive and well” as they continue to learn throughout their lives.
