For hundreds of years the border between Portugal and Spain was a stable line, demanding surveillance from both countries. In recent times smuggling became a common practice, specially during Spanish Civil War. Therefore, a complex network of police border outposts was built buy the Portuguese authorities. However, after the establishment of the open border in the European Community, such system became obsolete. The Border Police was extinct and most of its patrimony was sold in auctions, allowing individuals to buy excellent properties for a low price. These outposts were typically renovated by their proud new owners, resulting in awesome villas. But not all of them. The place I am showing you it's a good example of a "lost forever" border police outpost. I don't have specific details about this individual building, but its access is free and it's truly in the middle of nowhere, with Guadiana river running just in front of it, Spain in the other bank.
