Work on the first construction phase have been attributed to the construction company Sopol by the Company of Beja Airport Development (EDAB). This airport has an investment of about EUR 33 million and is expected to be operational by this July 2009 .
The Portuguese government intends to focus the airport for the processing of low cost airlines, since the airport will benefit from significantly lower airport charges. It is also important relevance of the fact that the airport is located a short time in the Algarve and hotel developments currently planned for the Costa Vicentina and Alqueva dam, this is also just a little over two hours in Lisbon With the airport to the Alentejo region has an opportunity to enhance and expand its economy, as it can get to know the beauty of southern Portugal
Apart from betting on tourism in the region, this airport has an impact on business development of the Lower Alentejo creating business dynamics for the development of new agriculture. It also provides an impetus to make the Alentejo as a platform for commercial and logistical support for the country as it becomes one of the points of the triangle formed by the Port of Sines and Alqueva dam (Portugal, 2007). This airport also allows for air cargo and allowed the formation of a major logistics hub airport in the south. All this because of size limitations of the airport runway at Faro. The port of Sines can benefit from this airport to an aerial distribution of products destined for Europe. It also intends to install an air surrounding the airport industrial units of semi-finished products, such as an assembly plant material from China for sale in the European market, it is also envisaged the establishment of units for the manufacture of aircraft components or maintenance of aircraft .
For better utilization of Beja Airport has been awarded the new stretch of motorway (A26) linking the port of Sines to this new airport, to make it more competitive, to unite the city of Baixo Alentejo, Beja, coastal areas and thus create an intermodal transportation and services. Also with this new motorway, the airport of Beja, for low-cost carriers, will not only link with the capital Lisbon, but also with the Algarve.
