The memorial pays homage the combatants of Faial who died in the Portuguese Colonial War, also known in Portugal as the Overseas War, which was fought between Portugal's military and the emerging nationalist movements in Portugal's African colonies between 1961 and 1974. The memorial was placed in 2005 following the end of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the war.
