Earthenware Factory was born from the dream of Raphael, cherished by longtime friend, Ramalho Ortigão, and Sister Mary Augusta. The land (80,000 m) was purchased by two tales of kings and in it there were two springs and two clay pits that serve as raw material for the manufacture of bricks, tiles and earthenware art. The deed of the plant, limited liability company, was signed on June 30, 1884 and Raphael gave himself body and soul to the architectural plan of the premises. The result was a two-story pavilion with two lateral bodies of earthen floors, for classes and washer tank surrounded by a landscaped park with trees and a large building on a ward where only machines were installed in addition to workshops and three ovens. In addition to a large pavilion for sale and storage of finished products.

Aimed "to explore the ceramic industry in the special branch of the pottery," and proposed to introduce, in addition to products and ornamental ceramic coating and washer of the kind that was cultivated in Caldas' objects of the finest earthenware stamped with pictures documents for ordinary uses, and ordinary dishes to the uses of the poorer classes'.

In 1885, Ramalho Ortigão made the following description of the factory:

"A steam engine of 25 horsepower boiler with tubular Danay, divides the movement in continuous employment for all sections of this pottery model. The mud begins to enter the pylon; passes consecutively to cruos; traverses the tanks, in which a electrical machine Fauci Limoges, purifies the body, pulling him by the magnet all scrap metal, is again beaten, kneaded mechanically reduced to the perfect plasticity, and ultimately to cut out, divided into loaves, to be worked on the wheel or around. The lathes and wheels are also powered by steam, corresponding to a transmission belt for each group of potters. circular tables, with the hollow center of the place of the monitor or foreman, is intended for sculptors, and the louceiro formistas glassblowers to painters. The stamping presses occupy a special home properly heated steam. The plant also has two mills in glass, 4 mills for paint, one climbs, seven kilns for brick and tile, 3 ovens for artistic dishes, two large and magnificent Minton kilns for the pottery of crushed stone, a kiln and a kiln. "

Factory production includes tiles, decorative and utilitarian, where Art Nouveau manifested individually, and a gallery of characters of the Portuguese society characteristic of the end of the century. XIX. This was followed by several exhibitions in the halls of Commerce of Portugal (1886), the Athenaeum Commercial Port and Industrial Exhibition in Lisbon (1888), the Exposition Universelle in Paris (1889/1890), Antwerp and Spain (1895) and United States of America (1905)
