There is an excellent scenic look-out giving views of the cliffs of Ponta do São Lourenço, the north east coast and the port of Caniçal.

A scenic viewpoint in Portuguese is “miradouro” There are many miradouros on the island of Madeira as the scenery here is incredible. This one is signposted at a traffic circle on the road past Caniçal east towards Ponta do São Lourenço. The GPS position is the viewpoint with the parking lot and picnic tables but the best views are up the hill to the left on Ponta do Rosto. All show the sheer cliffs, sea stacks and islands beaten by the waves. Views are best, late in the afternoon to get the sun highlighting the lava flows on the exposed cliffs.
The island to the left, Ilheu do Guincho (Screech Island), is named for the sound of the wind screeching theough the open arch. This feature cannont be seen well from this viewpoint or from the trails on São Lourenço. Distance views showing the arch are available from the Boca do Risco trail to Porto da Cruz.
