The search for hydrocarbons in Portugal dates back to 1844 with the discovery of the mine of asphalt. In addition to the paving of roads, the asphalt removed from this mine will have been used to pave all the stations of the railway from Lisbon to Elvas and the Junction to the Port, built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

The first grant period began in 1848 and labored irregularly until 1861 and that soon proved to be profitable.

Currently the mine collapsed and the place is quite deserted.

Until the few years (before the mine collapse), it was possible to get inside, after entering it followed a path that led to a "Well", access to the bottom was done by a spiral staircase. The Attempt to parish council of Pataias to seal the entrance of the mine was always in vain, since the successive metal doors and others were always vandalized.
