Marker says "The Nene is one of is on of 30 birds species in Hawaii classified as an endangered species. It is the only goose endemic (native) to the Hawaiian Islands which is still existence. Prior to 1778 there was an estimated population of 25,000 Nene which could be found on all major islands. By the mid 1900's the population dropped to less than 30 Nene in the wild. At this time there are approximately 500 Nene in the wild. Due to Hawaii's restoration efforts, the Nene population is being re-establishied."
