"This monument was dedicated May 8, 1997 to commemorate our sovereignty

"The Fort McDowell Yavapai Tribe took a stand for the sovereignty and well-being of its Indian community. It was on May 12, 1992 that Federal agents and Marshalls raided Fort McDowell gaming center to confiscate slot machines that had been installed at this facility.

"May 12th has become a historical marker for the Fort McDowell Indian Tribe; a day when words were backed by action, a day when a community stood together as one, claiming the right to exist as a sovereign nation."
Civil Right Type: National Origin
