On the northeast corner of E. 9th Street and Union Street, a welcoming sign states: "The Salvation Army Corps Community Center." This center provides assistance to people in the Shawnee area. Their annual Red Kettle drive provides seasonal help to people in Pottawatomie, Lincoln and Seminole Counties.

This shelter provides the following services:

In the East End of London England in 1852, William Booth took his gospel message to the people on the streets, rather than in the traditional church setting. As the new converts came to faith, their backgrounds in thievery, prostitution, gambling and alcohol was not accepted in the churches, so Booth continued to disciple these converts in his street setting.

By 1987, there were 1000 volunteers and 42 evangelists serving in what was known as "The Christian Mission." The volunteers were referred to as a volunteer army, which Booth renamed Salvation Army, as they are known today. Between 1881 and 1885, over 250,000 people were converted under the ministry of the Salvation Army. In 1879, Eliza Shirley held the first meeting of the Salvation Aarmy in America, in Philadelphia.
