The 300 bed hospital was designed by W.H. Wilcox of San Francisco. The pavilion styled building were built around a green area in San Francisco's presidio. The construction took places between 1899 and 1902. The hospital house many new technologies for that time - including x-rays. It was also the first army general hospital to employ women. In 1911 the facility was renamed the Letterman General Hospital, named after the Union Army’s Surgeon General, Dr. Jonathon Letterman.
The hospital was used during WWI, caring for 18,000 soldiers. During WWII, the hospital was used to treat soldiers returning from the Pacific. 73,000 were treated at Letterman during 1945.
In the early 200s, the hospital was demolished after the land became part of the National Parks Service. The Letterman Digital Arts Center was built on the site. The buildings house many of director George Luca's companies including, Industrial Light & Magic and LucasArt. The building were built to resemble the original hospital. Source:
