Atop Mount Vaea is the final resting place of Robert Louis Stevenson, known to the Samoan people as Tusitala (teller of stories).
His grave bears the following poem.
Under the wide and starry sky
Dig the grave and let me lie:
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.
This be the verse you grave for me:
Here he lies were he long'd to be;
Home is the sailor, home form the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.
Description: Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Scotland in 1850.
He was the author of books such as Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Due to ill health, including tuberculosis, he moved to Samoa in 1890 hoping that the warmer climate would help him.
During his time in Samoa, he was admired by many of the locals, especially for standing up for Samoan rights during the civil wars that were aided and promoted by the occupying forces from Germany, UK and the United States.
He died suddenly of a suspected brain haemorrhage at the age of 44.
