Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Scotland and wrote a number of well known fiction books including Treasure Island and Kidnapped, and the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

In 1888 he and his family sailed from San Fransisco, stopping at Hawai'i, Tahiti and the Samoan Islands. In 1890 he returned to Samoa and purchased the land on which this homestead sits.

Despite a brief stay in Sydney, Australia, he returned to Vialima, Samoa for his ailing health. In 1894 he died of a suspected cerebral haemorrhage, at the age of 44.

He was buried on the top of the hill to the west, Mount Vaea.

The homestead today acts a museum and is open from 9 am until 4 pm (Mon-Fri) and until noon (Sat). It is closed on Sunday.
