Located on the Saudi Arabia/Yemen border, you will need a local guide and/or permission to visit the dam. Around 6Km before the dam is a checkpoint where you will not be allowed to pass without the relevant permit - local hotels can arrange guided tours.
The views from the dam are spectacular even when it is dry, as during our visit, and the border guards stationed there very helpful and friendly, they even encouraged taking photographs!
