Orris Falls can be easily reached by hiking about one half a mile walk along a wide trail which wanders through quiet woods in south eastern Maine. The falls themselves are worth the hike, but the area has several interesting surprises, including the 150 year old grave site of the Littlefield family, and the remains of the foundation where their house used to stand.
There is also a
geocache located nearby.
The falls are made up of a primary steep drop of approximately 15 feet tall, followed by several shallow cascading breaks over rocks as the stream feeds into the gorge below. At the present time, several large fallen trees (one of which lies directly in the main part of the falls, another which crosses the stream at an angle just below the falls) somewhat interferes with an otherwise pleasant view of the falls, but in time these trees will likely disappear.
The top of the falls can be easily reached by a trail which follows along the southwestern side of the stream. Getting to the bottom of the falls requires some scrambling down the steep sides of the gorge. Best views are from the southwest side at the bottom of the gorge, or from the top of the falls.
