The Cambodian Royal Palace is situated in the capital city of Cambodia, Phnom Penh. It is a complex of buildings, set back from and facing the Mekong River. It is home to the King and the royal family, as well as being a major tourist attraction.

By day the Palace is an imposing sight, however, at night, when the lights in the palace grounds are operating, the Palace is transformed into a visual spectacle. The lights are attached to the river facing wall of the palace and to The Preah Thineang Chan Chhaya ("Moonlight Pavilion")—which was built directly against the wall of the palace. This pavilion is used to exhibit Khmer classical dance. The man depicted on the pavilion is the The King-Father of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk, who was the previous King of Cambodia, but voluntarily abdicated in 2004 in favour of his son, the current King, Norodom Sihamoni.

These lights are not operational every night, in fact, only on a handful of nights have I seen the Palace illuminated. These photos were taken during the celebrations of Cambodia's independence from France (Nov 9). At other times I have seen the Palace lit, but pot luck seems to apply.

Finding the Palace is easy enough, it is hard to miss in the city. It is in the centre of the tourist/expat region of Phnom Penh, on the riverfront. Dangers: motorcycles, beggars (annoying, not dangerous). There is an abundance of parking in this spot, and private transport, tuk tuks.
