Designed by Graham Stuart Thomas this rose garden is a tribute to his work. He was a trainee here at the garden before he became the distinguished plantsman he is famous for as well as Garden Adviser to the National Trust.

The garden we see today was planted in 1980-81. It is a commemorative garden planted for the 150th anniversary of Cambridge University acquiring this land in 1831.

Consisting of rose species and primary hybrids the south side roses are displayed long beds. The north side has island beds and shows new species crossed with traditional European varieties.

A plaque details the planting of the roses which were explored for their genealogy by geneticist Charles Chamberlain Hurst from 1922-1947 here:

'HURST'S ROSES
In the 1920s, important work involving experimental study
of the cytogenetics of roses was carried out in the Garden
by C.C. Hurst. The most familiar memorial to this research is
Rosa Cantabrigiensis, named in 1931. It is grown here with its
presumed parents, together with other Hurst roses.'
