The present church was built in 1833. During the Battle of Fredericksburg, the sanctuary roof sustained heavy damage. Even after the repairs were made, two cannon balls were left lodged at the front of the sanctuary. The church and its orphanage were used subsequently has a hospital. Clara Barton, who later founded the Red Cross, and Walt Whitman, who came to find his brother (fortunately still alive, although wounded) served in the hospital.
