A observação de aves e o contacto com a Natureza podem proporcionar uma excelente forma de motivar as
populações para respeitar o Ambiente e a usufruír deste espaço mediterrânico.

Dos guardas florestais, essenciais para o zelo do bem público e fundamentais no combate aos incêndios e
protecção das nossas florestas, ainda são recordados alguns nomes. De lamentar o estado de abandono e
degradação a que estão actualmente sujeitas as antigas instalações destes funcionários públicos.

Contam que outrora, a Mata das Mestras se encontrava associada à vinda, do Norte do País,
de duas “Mestras” (seriam duas irmãs da Ordem de Cister relacionadas com o Convento de Cós?) que
teriam exercido uma forte influência cultural sobre a população, ensinando desde as primeiras letras do
alfabeto até aos mais variados lavores domésticos e que elas eram também donas de grande parte da mata.

Os Irmãos Conversos ou Barbatos (como também lhes chama Alexandre Herculano na sua obra
“O Monge de Sister”) aparecem, segundo a lenda, igualmente associados ao passado da Mata das Mestras.
