This stadium was constructed in early 1960s, in the first flush of post-colonial independence, with, I believe, the expectation that one day it would host an Olympic event. Even though the venue did host a number of international events, and local sports activities, this was not to be. The Vietnam War and the Khmer Rouge regime put an end to any such aspiration. During the Khmer Rouge era the grounds of the stadium were used to execute political prisoners.

Prior to 2000 the stadium was in disrepair, however, since then it has been partially restored, and is now used for a variety of events including local football (soccer) games.

The stadium can seat 50,000 and has an Olympic sized pool. Here's hoping one day in will in fact host the Olympic Games.
