This 4m tall hexagonal column was made for the millennium by Craig and Mary Matthews. It represents various key aspects of Llandudno's history using materials which have relevance to each particular time band. The aim was to provide a vehicle for an historical narrative in the form of a vertical timeline.

Starting at the bottom of the column the time line is as follows:

Tropical Seas: 300 million years ago the Llandudno area was a warm shallow sea. Calcium carbonate deposits were laid down - now the carboniferious limestone rock forming the Orme.

Bronze Age Copper Mining: Prehistoric mining for copper ore going back to 1800 BC.

Roman Presence: Coins and pottery from the reign of Aurelian 270 AD have been found on the Orme.

Palace of medieval bishops, Viking Raids: 9th, 10th, 11th century.

Strong Christian Presence: Llan - Church, Tudno - Name of founding 6th century saint.

18th Century Llandudno: A collection of copper miners cottages perched high on Orme.

Promenade of Hotels: Facing the Bay - St. Georges Hotel, first hotel, built in 1854.

Railway Arrived: In 1858 bringing people from Northern England.

Llandudno's Second Pier: Built in 1875. An example of Victorian confidence in the future.

The North Wales Theatre: Welsh National Opera, October Fest.

Water and Waves with Sun Motif: Future optimism.

Crown: a veiled reference to Llandudno 'Queen of Welsh Resorts'.

It is made of a mixture of materials including Carboniferous limestone, copper, bronze, cast iron, steel, and ceramic. It was selected by public vote during an exhibition of shortlisted artists proposals and unveiled in 1998.
