'Ethos' — Vegetarian and Vegan Restaurant: “nourishing body and soul”

Khaosan Rd, Bangkok, is one of the ‘must see’ tourist attractions in the city. The street, and a few around, are home to an ever changing congregation of backpackers and travellers, mostly, but certainly not exclusively, younger people, from all over the world, including a good mix of local Thais, who also enjoy the atmosphere of the ‘road’. This area is packed with a busy melange of hotels, guest houses, bars, restaurants, street vendors, and shops. Parties late, but don’t expect much activity before 10am! A pleasant spot to hang for a few days (even for old folk).

This busy area is home to at least one excellent vegetarian restaurant, ‘Ethos’ by name. This is medium sized restaurant (seats max 50, on two levels), situated not on Khaosan itself, but a little to the north west, down an alley way (map in gallery), behind a street of silver jewellery shops, in a line of restaurants (not as difficult as may sound).

As you enter, you will find this a little different from most restaurants in the area. First, take off those shoes! Socks or bear-feet are the order of the day, however, never fear, if rain comes sleeting down the staff will move your shoes undercover. Second, half of the seating is at table, the other, on the floor (at least on mats, with big cushions)—your choice. Last, but not certainly least, unlike most restaurants on Khaosan, Ethos is non-smoking! (yay) All with soft lighting, and quiet music (why leave?)

When you turn your attention to the food, you will also be agreeably surprised. The sizeable menu here serves both Thai, Indian, and western tasty vegetarian fare. The restaurant also specifically caters to vegans, and serves a variety of vegan food—so marked in the menu. All delicious. The owner is an ardent proponent of the vegetarian lifestyle, who will happily engage you in a conversation covering food, health, and lifestyle, if you so desire.

There are a number of ancillary services offered. Wifi (speedy) is included in the cost of your meal. There are tourist books and brochures, as well as a lending library. The staff are also knowledgeable in tourist matters. If those muscles are weary after a day of sight-seeing, you can also enjoy a massage, and receive health advice. Cookery classes, for those so inclined are also available. Easy place to spend a few hours. Enjoy.

Go to end of Khaosan Road (Burger King).
Go Left about 50 meters and cross over the road at silver shops.
Go into 2nd lane on the right.
See the big Ethos sign in the back street.
