Santa Cruz is a quiet seaside town on the sunny coast of Madeira. It is remarkably quiet, pleasant and laid back considering its location at the end of Madeira's airport runway and under the expressway tunneling and bridging its route through to Funchal. While enjoying the promenade by the sea, we were impressed with the number of compass roses. The location is for the largest. The pictures show the other nautical motifs in the paving stones, mariners ‘ astrolabes, anchors, and caravels. I was surprised there were no armillary spheres, a recurring nautical theme in Portugal.
