Built in 1842, this building was home to a brewing company, producing 20,000 barrels of beer annually by the year 1904. The company was closed in 1919 with the enactment of Prohibition. Subsequently it housed a number of businesses until 1976 when it once again became a (micro) brewery, and a pub.
It has operated under the name Brewery Arcade, Mault's Pub, and the Portsmouth Brewing Company. In addition to the home brews made and served here, there is the usual American Pub fare for food - chicken, sandwiches and pizza.
The sign depicts a barge plying the mighty Ohio River just about a half kilometer away, from which the town is protected by an impressive flood wall. Modern barges are still a significant form of commercial transportation up and down the river.
