The Kasbah is a unique kind of medina, or Islamic city. It stands in one of the finest coastal sites on the Mediterranean, overlooking the islands where a Carthaginian trading-post was established in the 4th century BC. There are the remains of the citadel, old mosques and Ottoman-style palaces as well as the remains of a traditional urban structure associated with a deep-rooted sense of community.

The Kasbah lies on a steep incline and the narrow passageways between buildings often have steps on them, making vehicular access impossible. Therefore all access is on foot. The Kasbah provided the ideal cover for the Algerian resistance movement and the French colonial forces found it impossible to flush out the resistance, or control the area. It is this regarded by Algerians as the roots of their independence.

Just between the Kasbah and the port of Algiers lies "La Place des Martyrs" (The Martyrs' Square) at N 36° 47.100' E 3° 3.750'. Just to the west, at the coordinates for the Waymark is the Ketchaoua Mosque. To the north, south and west of the mosque is the labyrinth of the Kasbah.

Please post a photo of the mosque and and of other interesting areas in the Kasbah.
