This 'milestone' (distance measured in kilometres) is situated outside the former residence and administrative offices of the French governor of the Battambang province, in western Cambodia. As I understand it, this was also the location of the Thai governor's offices and residence, during the period, prior to French rule, when Thailand (Siam) ruled the region. This is in the 'old' part of the town. In the surrounding area are several other sets of government offices, including the provincial museum.
There is no date on the milestone, however, it is constructed in the French colonial era style. Between the world wars the then French government of Cambodia invested in Cambodia's infrastructure. Hence this period is the most likely date for the construction of the milestone. There are four sides to the milestone, one, however, is blank. The other three show distances to regions in western and central Cambodia, and to the capital Phnom Penh. Possibly, the missing panel lists distances to towns in eastern Cambodia.
The marker is worn, but legible. Signs of repair are present, but overall, it looks to be in its original condition.
