This scenic reserve on the south side of Cape Wanbrow is a few minutes from Oamaru. It is the home of the Hoiho, yellow eyed penguins. A concerted conservation effort has saved the hoiho (yellow eyed penguin) from extinction. There are free public viewing hides along a walkway above the beach cliffs. The best viewing is between 3pm before dark (when the birds come ashore) and at sunrise (when they go to sea). Yellow-eyed penguins will be reluctant to come ashore if you are in plain sight on the beach, so you are requested to stay off the beaches and in the hides after 3pm.
