This memorial just outside the city walls of Bavarian Rothenburg ob der Tauber was erected in honor of ALL Jewish citizen that were killed over a period of 700 years.

Of course that includes the holocaust, but the memorial was erected at the 700th anniversary of the town's first pogrom. In 1298, after more than fifty years of peaceful co-existence in Rothenburg, around 250 of the town's 500 Jews were killed during a series of uprisings. A group of them had sought refuge at the castle, but were attacked there by an angry mob and burned to death.

In 1998, this memorial stone was placed at the location of the fire, honoring all victims of antisemitism - from those that were burned in 1298 to those that were deported in 1938, demonstrating that the Holocaust didn't come out of the blue.

We came across this little known place purely by accident, just strolling along the city walls of Rothenburg. Being part of the German post-war generation, it was a sad reminder of the deep roots racism has in our society. Our generation's duty is not let these victims be forgotten, which is why we place this waymark.
