This building is the civil court of Basel-Stadt. The court of appeal is also located in the same building. There are five chambers.

The building is from 1859, but the court was located here since 1808, the court registry even since 1762. The original building from architect Johann Jakob Stehlin was extended in 1895 by Heinrich Reese.

In the 1960s there were plans for bigger building at the same address, but a referendum stopped them. As a consequence the criminal court and the juvenile court moved out to new locations.
