Trata-se de um baixo relevo em bronze
realizado em 1897 pelo escultor Teixeira Lopes, pai e que
eternizou o dia 29 de Março de 1809 no qual centenas de pessoas,
fugindo das tropas do Marechal Soult que atacavam a cidade sob
ordens de Napoleão, faleceram na travessia da Ponte das Barcas.
O peso e a aflição da população em fuga originou o afundamento
da ponte que ligava as duas margens do rio Douro.
Hoje em dia, os cidadãos depositam velas acesas e flores nas
Alminhas da Ponte para lembrar a tragédia.
Este baixo relevo faz parte do conjunto
considerado Património da Humanidade pela Unesco.

It is a bronze bas-relief made in
1897 by sculptor Teixeira Lopes,
father and immortalized on March 29,
1809 in which hundreds of people
fleeing the troops of Marshal Soult
who attacked the city under orders
from Napoleon, died
to cross the Bridge of Boats.
The weight and distress of the population fleeing the sinking resulted in the
bridge connecting both banks of the
River Douro.
Today, citizens place flowers and
candles in Alminhas Bridge to mark
the tragedy.
This bas-relief

classified by UNESCO as Humanity
