Die Nikolaisäule ist Ergebnis eines international internationalen künsterlichen Wettbewerbs von 1992.
Mit dem klassizistischen Säulenmotiv aus der Nikolaikirche erinnert der Leipziger Künstler Andreas Stötzner an die montäglichen Friedensgebete mit den anschliessenden Demonstrationen des Herbstes 1989.
Die Säule wurde durch Spenden sowie Mittel der Stadt Leipzig und der Bundesregierung von der Kulturstiftung Leipzig errichtet. Ausführung der Säule und Gestaltung der Bodenplatte realisierte der Leipziger Bildhauer Markus Gläser.
Am 9. Oktober 1999 wurde das Denkmal in Anwesenheit des Bundeskanzlers vom Präsidenten der Kulturstiftung Leipzig und dem Leipziger Oberbürgermeister eingeweiht.
