" The march evolved from a weekly vigil for peace at St. Nicholas Church in the city center, which used to attract only a small group of dissidents. But the service has swiftly swollen into a weekly focus of large-scale protest.

Tonight, vigils were held at seven churches, and St. Nicholas was packed to capacity long before the 5 P.M. service. For the first time, loudspeakers were set up around the church so the swelling crowd outside could follow. "
